Cryptocurrency debit cards our top tips

Crypto wallets and crypto payment cards are handy but remember there is often an exchange rate or currency conversion process at the point of sale/purchase (POS). Your crypto holdings can increase and decrease in value according to the latest coin exchange rate and market price. However crypto payment cards make spending your crypto easy, just follow these steps:

  1. Find a coin exchange or broker, sign up and set up a digital wallet – verify your details on your crypto exchange website or via their mobile app.
  2. Buy some coin – your cryptocurrency exchange will list the available coins you can purchase for real ‘fiat’ currency. It’s best to start with a recognised coin like Bitcoin, Ethereum or maybe your crypto exchange has its own digital currency that you can buy.
  3. Order your crypto payment card from your provider
  4. Receive you card and spend your crypto – Once you receive your crypto card you will usually have to activate it in the app or via the card providers website. When your card is activated you can start to use it right away. Most cards work with a ‘POS conversion’ (point of sale realtime conversion). Your cryptocurrency balance will be converted into the purchase currency at interexchange coin rate and the corresponding value of crypto holdings will be drawn from your crypto balance to meet the sale/purchase ‘fiat’ currency price. Card providers may charge a small conversion fee for each purchase so make sure you are aware of the fees for using your card.

Cryptocurrency payment cards work similar to prepayment debit cards, you spend from your crypto balance and top up crypto coin balances as needed. Make sure you understand the card fees & charges for using your crypto payment card, these can include crypto to fiat currency conversion fees & card usage fees. Fee’s & charges might make using a crypto payment card unsuitable for smaller value transactions. Your crypto card provider should list all the card fees clearly in their FAQs or T&Cs.

WHERE IS MY CRYPTO CURRENCY STORED?

Your cryptocurrency is usually stored in a digital wallet in your mobile app & backed up at your crypto exchange or crypto bank.

You can ‘trade’ buy, sell or swap cryptocurrencies at a coin exchange or crypto broker platform – see our guide on buying and selling cryptocurrencies. Usually all you need to do is download a coin exchange or broker app, sign up for an account and set up a funding method (you can fund your account by wire transfer from a bank account, or by transferring in funds using a debit/credit card). Most crypto payment card providers listed in this article also allow trading of cryptocurrencies.
