How to get the cheapest broadband deal – Things to consider before switching broadband provider

What's the best deal for you?

Getting the best broadband deal depends on various factors. Here are some things you might need to consider or check:

What's happens when you switch broadband provider?

Switching broadband provider is usually fast & easy:

Who provides the cheapest broadband in the UK?

Looking specifically at low cost, the cheapest nationwide broadband deals we’ve found come in at £25 or less per month. Now, Onestream, SKY & Vodafone, can provide home broadband to around 99% of UK homes via the Openreach network.

If you can get fibre to the premises (FTTP), the best full fibre deals we’ve found are with Airband £16.50 per month, Community Fibre starting from £17.99, followed by Gigaclear from £19.00 per month.

Cheapest and fastest don’t necessarily equal the best. In the most recent Ofcom customer satisfaction report (April to June 2024), SKY came out on top with the least number of Ofcom complaints 5 per 100,000, Plusnet came second with 6 out of 100,000.

‘Which’ broadband satisfaction survey (December 2024) put smaller providers Community Fibre, Hyperoptic &  Zen at the top of their results based on overall customer satisfaction scores.

Which broadband
connection is best?

The types and speed of broadband depend on where you live and the services available at your postcode. Compare the different types of internet connection and achievable internet speeds below to determine the best connections available where you live:

ADSL stands for asymmetric digital subscriber line ADSL provided the backbone for standard broadband services.

ADSL speeds are slower than cable or fibre typically ranging from lows of 6Mbps to highs of 20Mbps. ADSL connections are being converted to FTTC & FTTP connections as the UK Fibre upgrade rolls out.

FTTC is fibre to the phone cabinet FTTC fibre broadband is now available in most homes in the UK. Providing super fast broadband with speeds anywhere between 30Mbps to 250Mbs.

Cable broadband provides super fast broadband via coaxial cable technological advances have enabled cable services to offer super fast internet speeds from 130Mbps to over 500Mbps, that’s up there with full-fibre speeds.

FTTP is full fibre to the premises a full fibre connection means you can get fibre optic cables installed directly to your home. With full fibre you do not have to rely on slow copper wiring, you can get the fastest fibre speeds available in your area.

Full fibre currently provides speeds starting around 100Mbps rising to over 800Mps in some locations.

4G & 5G services provide wireless broadband connections through a mobile network achievable speeds are similar to fibre.

Currently nationwide coverage is patchy but as network coverage and technology improves mobile broadband will increasingly offer a viable alternative to fixed-line internet services.

Satellite internet services provide broadband via a satellite dish satellite internet connections are a useful solution for getting fast internet in remote places e.g. on a boat, in a mountainous or very rural location.
