Taking out insurance for a static caravan or touring caravan is not a legal requirement in the UK, however it is sensible to get your caravan insured for a number of reasons. Having caravan insurance cover provides you with peace of mind that you are financially covered against accidents and events that could result in damage your caravan and your ability to use it.
You will need to provide a few specific details about yourself and your caravan to compare caravan insurance quotes. Including details of club memberships, towing or driver training (caravan/trailer tow training), to see if you qualify for caravan insurance discounts.
The caravan owner or keepers name and address.
Make, model, age, registration number.
Number of berths/bedrooms and main usage.
Caravan site or park where your static caravan is located.
Where you store your touring caravan on a driveway or in a secure storage facility.
Cover level required, third party, fully comprehensive, market value, new for old.
Claims history / number of years NO claims.
There are two types of caravan for insurance purposes, static caravans and touring caravans. Each have their own individual insurance policies, responsible caravan owners will arrange caravan insurance to protect caravan and contents for peace of mind.
How do static caravan and touring caravan insurance policies differ?
Static caravans are generally permanently sited on a holiday park or caravan park so they are unlikely to be moved or stolen.
Your caravans ‘location’, where your static caravan is sited, can often influence insurance availability and cost e.g. a caravan located in a coastal location is more likely to be exposed to harsh weather conditions and an increased risk of storm damage or flooding.
For static caravans sited on holiday parks & caravan parks, providing proof of your caravan insurance cover can be a requirement of the park rules.
Touring caravans are designed to be towed by a vehicle so they are subject to road risks, other traffic and potential accidents.
Due to their tow-ability touring caravans are easier to steal, so adequate cover for caravan theft is important. Touring caravan policies often require touring caravans to be securely stored when they are not being used.
Many touring caravan insurance policies also require security devices to be fitted: hitch-locks, wheel clamps, alarms or GPS trackers.
A standard caravan insurance policy (for static caravans or touring caravans) should provide cover for fire, theft, accidental damage and weather/storm damage. A standard caravan insurance policy should provide the following:
The cost of caravan insurance varies depending on whether you want insurance cover for a touring caravan or static caravan. The level of cover you choose and the policy excess (the amount you will pay upfront to make a claim).
Other factors influencing caravan insurance cost include: age, size, make, model, & market value of a caravan.
Larger, higher value caravans will generally have more expensive caravan insurance premiums. Some makes and models of touring caravan are more desirable to thieves, and considered to have a greater risk of being stolen. It’s worth researching caravan insurance costs before committing to buy a specific caravan. Caravan insurance premiums vary from one insurer to another so shopping around will provide you with a number of quotes and policies to compare and choose from.
Many caravan insurance policies allow you to choose either ‘new for old’ cover, or ‘market value’ cover.
Market Value – Only covers up to the current market value of a caravan. If your caravan needs replacing, the policy will only pay out an amount equal to cost of replacing the caravan with a caravan of similar age and condition. Market value could be less than what you consider your caravan is worth as it generally takes the lowest average market value.
New for Old – If your caravan is stolen or damaged beyond repair, new for old cover will replace your caravan ‘like for like’ with a new caravan (the same make and model, or another caravan with similar specification).
New for old cover is often only available when insuring newer caravans. Many caravan insurance providers will not offer new for old cover on caravans when they are over 10-15 years old.
There are a number of things you can do to reduce the cost of a caravan insurance premium, these include:
Building up a no claims bonus just like any insurance cover, you can build up a no claims discount for caravan insurance. When renewing caravan insurance, providers will consider your claims history. If you have a good no claims record this will usually be reflected in lower insurance offers.
Taking added security measures many caravan insurance providers offer discounts if owners agree to install and use added security measures. You can improve caravan security by:
Joining a caravan club many caravan insurance providers offer discounts to members of UK caravan owner clubs including: NACCO, The Caravan Club, Camping & Caravanning Club. Members benefit from caravan insurance discounts and lower premiums. If you are a caravan club member inform the insurance provider when you get quotes to apply any qualifying discount.
Many caravan insurance policies include 3rd party liability cover, so theoretically this provides cover for use by family and friends. However for peace of mind it is wise to check with your insurance provider before lending your caravan, to make sure you are adequately covered.
Although most caravan insurance policies include 3rd party liability cover, this often won’t cover you to rent your caravan on a commercial basis (to paying guests).
Some providers offer the option to take additional cover for renting a caravan to guests e.g. Ripe caravan rental insurance cover in addition to public liability, offers extra cover for damage or loss attributed to paying guests. It also covers loss of rentals should you have to cancel bookings if your caravan is damaged & is unable to be used.
