Do I need motorhome insurance or campervan insurance?

YES – Having insurance for a motorhome, campervan or RV is a legal requirement in the UK, as they are classified as a self-propelled, road going vehicle. Motorhome & campervan insurance cover is usually provided by specialist recreational vehicle or RV insurers.

Basic motorhome insurance cover provides peace of mind that you will be financially covered for accidents or unforeseen events that could result in damage to other people, property & vehicles (also known as third party cover). Enhanced or ‘full cover’ covers your own motorhome or campervan, third parties, other vehicles and property (also known as fully comprehensive cover).

What category does my motorhome, campervan or RV fall into?

When you provide details of your motorhome, campervan or RV the insurance providers will be able to correctly classify which category your vehicle fits into.

RVs, motorhomes and campervans are classified by build type, size, vehicle make and engine size. Policy costs will vary depending on how your motorhome, camper or RV is classified. So expect to pay less for insuring a small campervan, compared to a large motorhome or RV.

What should a motorhome, campervan or RV insurance policy cover?

Motorhome, campervan & RV insurance is similar to other vehicle insurance with 3 levels of cover to choose from. Third party, third party fire and theft, and comprehensive insurance cover options are available.

Third Party Only

Most basic level protection, only covers you for claims made against you by third parties (damage you, or your vehicle causes to someone else, or their property).

You have NO cover for fire or theft.
You remain personally responsible for all costs of damage to and repairs needed on your own motorhome, camper or RV.

Third Party Fire & Theft

Most basic level protection, only covers you for claims made against you by third parties (damage you, or your vehicle causes to someone else, or their property).

You HAVE cover for fire damage, theft of your motorhome, camper or RV
…excluding fire and theft, you remain responsible for all costs of damage and repairs needed on your own motorhome.

Comprehensive Insurance

Comprehensive insurance protection for a motorhome, camper or RV and its contents, including camping accessories and other personal possessions stored inside.

Includes cover for accidents and damage to your own motorhome and damage to other vehicles or property (when you are at fault).

Includes cover for fire damage and theft of your motorhome, camper or RV and personal possessions kept inside.

More motorhome insurance FAQs

There are a number of things you can do to reduce your motorhome, campervan or RV insurance costs. These include:

1. Pay annually – if you can afford to pay your premium in full you could get a discount compared to paying in  monthly instalments.

2. Reduce your annual mileage – if you have a rough idea of your annual mileage you might be able to reduce your premium by agreeing to limit your annual mileage.

3. Build up your NO claims – if you have built up a period without making a claim, you will be considered as a safer driver. Most policies offer ‘no-claims discounts’ and reduced premiums.

4. Improve security – consider fitting enhanced motorhome security devices these include: immobilisers, alarms or GPS trackers.

5. Store your motorhome safely – consider storing your motorhome in a certified secure storage facility.

Check your policy / contact your insurance provider – UK motor insurance policies provide a minimum level of third party cover in EU countries. This usually includes policies for motorhomes, campervans or RVs. However many insurance providers only offer basic protection.

If you aren’t fully covered by your policy you may want to add additional cover with your provider (if they offer it), or you may have to take out an additional policy to use your motorhome or campervan abroad.

Many EU countries require you to carry a copy of your insurance cover around with you, so don’t forget to take details with you. You must also comply with the EU driving rules and regulations. You can check the Government guide – Driving abroad >>
