Who can get satellite internet?

– Satellite internet can be accessed in most locations providing you have a clear view to the sky.
– It’s a great solution for homes and businesses that can’t access terrestrial services via a landline, ADSL, fibre or mobile broadband.
– If you live a long way from the nearest telephone exchange or roadside cabinet, satellite broadband can provide a good solution for getting online.
– Satellite internet services are probably not viable if you live in a city with reliable & fast fibre or cable internet. In the countryside and places where fibre and cable is unavailable, satellite internet is often the fastest and most reliable way to get broadband.

How to get satellite internet?

– Satellite internet access requires a satellite receiver or dish and satellite compatible modem/router.
– Installation involves professional dish installation and positioning to receive a good signal. Installation and connection testing is usually completed in a few hours.

What does satellite internet cost?

The cost of satellite internet services has fallen in the last few years, you can now get satellite internet from £30 / $40 / €30 per month. Many services offer a choice and speeds, with higher pricing for the fastest speeds (*note: BRDY & Starlink offer unlimited data however other providers still have data allowances or caps, this could be limiting if you are a big data user).

Most satellite internet services require extra equipment to get online (a dish receiver) and you may also need to pay for professional installation of some services.

Increased competition and the launch of new services like OneNet should improve price, speed and availability.

Best alternatives to satellite broadband

If you live in a ‘broadband connected area’ you can probably get fast enough internet via fibre, cable or ADSL services available. See what broadband deals are available in your postcode, compare UK broadband prices where you live.

If you know fixed line broadband is unsuitable where you live, you can consider beamed broadband services or mobile broadband via LTE 4G & 5G mobile connections.
